Antioxidant Activity
The extract of Chaparro Amargo is a potent antioxidant that may help prevent the action of free radicals caused by certain pharmacological mutagens. Its antioxidant properties suggest a protective role against precancerous liver cells in experimental animals. However, this property has not yet been validated through clinical trials in humans.
Additionally, the aqueous extract has shown antimutagenic effects, reducing the number of mutations induced by norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone known to produce free radicals.
Skin Care
Topically, Chaparro Amargo can be used as a tincture, decoction, or poultice. Tincture drops, made from the branches, are applied directly to acne lesions to support skin health.
Antimalarial Activity
The growing resistance of the human malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) to chloroquine and other antimalarial drugs has spurred the search for new treatments. Several quassinoids have demonstrated significant in vitro activity against this parasite. Documented evidence also supports the antimalarial properties of the Simaroubaceae family, to which Chaparro Amargo belongs.
Antitumor Activity
The cytotoxic activity of various quassinoids is well known. Studies have shown that quassinoids from Chaparro Amargo exhibit mild in vitro activity against lymphocytic leukemia.
